Emergency Lighting

BS 5266 Compliant Emergency Lighting Installation and Certification

Emergency lighting is a legal requirement for most commercial and industrial premises, ensuring that in the event of a mains power failure, escape routes remain safely illuminated and occupants can evacuate the building without risk. Enterprise Electrics provides emergency lighting design, installation, testing, maintenance and certification for commercial and industrial clients across the West Midlands, Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield and South Staffordshire.

What is Emergency Lighting?

Emergency lighting is an independent lighting system with its own battery back-up, designed to activate automatically in the event of a mains power failure. Emergency lighting systems are required to remain operational for a minimum of one hour (and up to three hours for certain premises) following a mains supply failure, providing sufficient illumination for safe evacuation along designated escape routes.

Emergency lighting is typically required at or near:

  • Fire exit doors and final exit points
  • Escape route corridors and stairwells
  • Changes in floor level along escape routes
  • Toilet and washroom facilities in larger premises
  • Locations where fire-fighting equipment and first aid facilities are situated
  • Electrical intake and plant rooms

Legal Requirements

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person for any commercial or industrial premises to ensure that all escape routes and exits are equipped with adequate emergency lighting. The relevant British Standard is BS 5266-1, which specifies requirements for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of emergency lighting systems.

Emergency lighting is required by law in the vast majority of non-domestic premises, including:

  • Offices, commercial premises and business parks
  • Retail units, shops and shopping centres
  • Hospitality and leisure venues — restaurants, bars, hotels and event spaces
  • Industrial units, factories and warehouses
  • Educational establishments
  • Healthcare facilities and surgeries
  • Houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) with communal areas

Emergency Lighting Installation

Our engineers carry out the full design and installation of emergency lighting systems in line with BS 5266, including:

  • Site survey and system design
  • Supply and installation of maintained or non-maintained luminaires
  • Wiring and connection to the mains supply
  • Installation of central battery systems where required
  • Commissioning, testing and certification
  • Issue of an emergency lighting completion certificate

Testing, Maintenance and Certification

Emergency lighting systems must be tested and inspected on a regular basis to remain compliant. BS 5266 requires a monthly function test and a full annual discharge test. Enterprise Electrics provides:

  • Annual emergency lighting testing and certification
  • Monthly function testing services
  • One-off emergency lighting inspections and tests
  • Remedial repairs and luminaire replacement
  • Full inspection reports for compliance records
