Consumer unit upgrade

Safe, Certified Fuse Board Replacements Across the West Midlands

The consumer unit – commonly referred to as the fuse board or fuse box – is the control centre of your property’s electrical installation. An outdated or non-compliant consumer unit can compromise the safety of your property, affect your ability to obtain insurance, and prevent a satisfactory outcome on an EICR inspection. Enterprise Electrics provides professional consumer unit upgrades for residential and commercial properties across the West Midlands, Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield and South Staffordshire.

Why Upgrade Your Consumer Unit?

Outdated Fuse Board

Many older properties still have rewirable fuse boards or early MCB boards with no residual current device (RCD) protection. These do not meet current safety standards and can leave occupants at significantly higher risk of electric shock or fire. Modern consumer units with RCD or RCBO protection provide a far greater level of safety.

Failed or Unsatisfactory EICR

Consumer unit condition is one of the key items assessed during an EICR. An outdated or non-compliant consumer unit is frequently recorded as a C2 (potentially dangerous) observation, requiring remedial action before a satisfactory certificate can be issued.

Additional Circuits or Increased Load

If you are planning an extension, installing a new kitchen or bathroom, adding an EV charge point or otherwise increasing the electrical demand on your property, the existing consumer unit may not have sufficient capacity or appropriate protection for the additional circuits required.

Insurance Requirements

Many home and commercial property insurers require evidence of a compliant consumer unit as a condition of cover. An upgrade ensures you meet these requirements and removes any potential grounds for voiding a claim.

What a Consumer Unit Upgrade Involves

Our engineers will assess the existing installation and recommend a suitable replacement unit for your property. A typical upgrade involves:

  • Isolation and safe removal of the existing fuse board
  • Supply and installation of a new metal-clad consumer unit with full RCD or RCBO protection
  • Reconnection of all existing circuits to the new unit
  • Full inspection and testing of all circuits
  • Issue of an Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate
  • Notification to building control under Part P of the Building Regulations

Fully NAPIT Certified

All consumer unit upgrades carried out by Enterprise Electrics are fully certified by an NAPIT approved engineer and notified to building control. You will receive the documentation required to satisfy your insurer, letting agent, local authority or mortgage lender.
